Types of Roots

Generally,  there are two types of roots - the tap root and the fibrous or placental root.

Tap Root

  • This root is found in dicotyledonous plants. Radix develops and becomes the main root. The roots around the main root originate from the secondary roots and the lateral roots from the secondary roots, and all together form the tapula root system. Tap root is a primary root that grows more or less straight down into the soil and is tapered towards the end. It is found in many of the plants. It is also called as true root. Smaller roots that branch out from the tap root are called as lateral roots. Examples of plants with tap roots are hibiscus, carrot, turnip and sunflower.
  • Conversion of Tap Roots

Based on the work done by the roots, the pestle roots are divided as follows -

  • Fusiform :- This type roots is thick in the middle and thin on both sides to food accumulation. They produce secondary and tertiary roots. Like radish.
